I designed an iPhone app called the “REI Survival Guide”. This app would allow the user to plan a trip according to what they wanted to do and then help in preparation of that trip. The app would take information like duration as well as date of trip, type (climbing, hunting, skiing, etc.), and location. The user’s answers would effect the suggestions the app would give back, such as a list of items to bring/buy, what to wear depending on the season, and what activities to pursue. The app also doubled as a survival guide, which offered an extensive index on things like how to tie knots, how to start a fire, what plants not to eat, etc. The app also builds the equity of the REI brand by allowing the user to easily buy things from the checklist they may not own yet.
I'm trying to get this thing sold to REI. If you can help me out, let me know.

The Trip Planner assists people for just about any kind of outdoor activity. They just input their location, duration of the trip, and what kind of trip their taking, be it a camping, hiking, biking, climbing, etc. After that's done, the app calculates weather conditions for that location during the time the user will be there, and based on the type of trip they're taking the app will come up with a checklist of essential items to bring.

After running through the checklist of things to bring on a trip, there may be items that the user doesn't own. This is an opportunity for REI to make it as easy as possible for those people to make a purchase. Going on a camping trip and don't have a tent? No problem, order it on the app and pick it up on your way out of town.

Another section of this app which is not built out yet is the survival guide. This would be a huge tool for anyone going on an expedition. The survival guide would offer many of the tips and strategies learned in something like Boy Scouts or NOLS. For example, how to tie knots, start a fire, catch a fish with a spear, which plants to avoid, which plants are edible, and so on. I can tell you personally, I've needed such a tool before in my backpacking days. Don't eat just any berries. Big mistake.
